The three legged stool TM

An Auto ID system is like a three legged stool... 

   One leg is what you need to read, the label, tag, button, RF tag, etc.  "Should we print / create them in house?"  "What type of bar code do we need?"  "Should we be using RF tags?"  "Will it hold up in my environment?"  "Will the adhesive stick when we apply it?" "Will our printer print to industry specifications?" Etc., etc., 

   Another leg is the reader.  "Will it read the tag / label?"  "Will it work in our environment; temperature, moisture, light level, distance?"  "Is it ergonomic?" "Do we need / want a key pad?"  "Will it last?"  "How do we get service?"

   The third leg is the application software.  Collected data is just that: "data"!  You need to turn data into meaningful information!  Sometimes this means interfacing with an existing system, sometimes it means a whole new system, sometimes both!  "We may be able to print a label, but the reader needs to be programed..."  "We can collect the data, but now we need to make sense out of it."  "...We really need to communicate with our existing system..."  "We could use a custom program that would take the scanned data and..."
